Newly elected T.D., Noel McCarthy, has pledged to keep Fermoy ‘front and centre’, following his election to Dáil Eireann. After 2 tension filled days of counting, the Cobh native and former publican, won through, following the elimination of running mate, Mark Stanton and geographically, his nearest rivals, Cllr. Deirdre O’Brien (Mitchelstown) and Cllr. William O’Leary (Rathcormac).
Remarkably, at one stage, there were only 9 votes separating William and Noel. In the final analysis, the four Cork East seats went to Pat Buckley (Sinn Fein), James O’Connor (Fianna Fáil), Noel McCarthy (Fine Gael) and Liam Quaide (Social Democrats). While a lot of readers of The Avondhu may not have been familiar with the former Green Party member, Liam Quaide was always a contender, being an established councillor in ever expanding Midleton.
SIGNIFICANT FACTORS
Noel McCarthy’s still strong links with Cobh, his transfer friendly persona and the non-stop canvassing of his 85-year-old mother, Monica, turned out to be significant factors in last Sunday afternoon’s results. Speaking to The Avondhu in the aftermath of his election, Monica said her son ran a very strong campaign and she was delighted to be part of it.
