A new government pilot scheme is set to offer grants of up to €7,500 to landowners who wish to prepare vacant farmhouses for refurbishment.
It’s hoped the grant scheme will encourage farmers to avail of expert conservation advice for vacant and derelict houses, which are also eligible for up to €50,000 under the Croí Cónaithe Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, as well as €20,000 from the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) for increasing old buildings’ energy efficiency.
There are currently 1,373 abandoned farmhouses in County Cork alone, according to Census 2022, with 520 adults homeless and in emergency accommodation in Cork City and county.
The €7,500 pilot grant is not for carrying out renovations but for necessary preparations such as surveying and preparing a report into the renovations that would enhance the character, energy efficiency, integrity, and amenity” of neglected farmhouses.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage announced the pilot scheme earlier this month for all “vernacular” architecture, including old farmhouses and cottages.
Those interested in availing of the scheme can apply through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage website.
