Chair of Galbally Community Council Tom Blackburn has warmly welcomed the news that €50,000 has been granted to a project in the Canon Hennessy Community Centre in the village by the Department for Rural and Community Development.

The funds have been granted for a scoping exercise for the redevelopment and upgrade of the community centre, which is in need of a lot of work, according to Mr Blackburn. The building, a former school which dates from at least 1890, needs repairs to the roof as well and other elements which need to be tackled too, including the issue of rising damp.

Speaking with The Avondhu earlier this week, Mr Blackburn said they were delighted with the news as the council continues working in the background on plans for the building. Funding is always an issue for any community project and while government grants are very welcome, they will rarely cover the cost of works without an element of local fundraising.
