St Patrick’s Hill, Cork to host International Event
on Sunday, 5th June
Red Bull Soapbox Race will return to Ireland this summer when dozens of the country’s most innovative and witty amateur drivers will race their homemade soapbox crafts down the incredibly steep St Patrick’s Hill in Cork on Sunday, 5 June in front of over 50,000 people.
Red Bull Soapbox Race is an international event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles. Each hand-made machine is fuelled by nothing but sheer courage, the force of gravity and perhaps a little Red Bull.
This unique, non-motorised racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous soapbox dream machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race.
Approximately 70 teams will compete in the Red Bull Soapbox Race, which encourages gear heads and adrenaline junkies alike to break out their toolboxes and build outrageous human-powered vehicles designed to thrill the masses.
Those interested in participating need to go to www.RedBullSoapBoxRace.ie, request the application pack and must submit their Soapbox design by 31st March. Successful teams will be notified in mid-April when they will receive instructions on how to proceed with building their Soapbox, ahead of the 5 June showdown.
Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world since the first one in Brussels in the year 2000 – from Australia to South Africa, Ireland to St. Louis, Jamaica to Italy.
Held previously in Cork (2004) and Belfast (2002 & 2008), this will be the fourth time the international race has taken place in Ireland. Over the years, vehicles have ranged from realistic replicas to anything the imagination can conjure up.
Previous designs have included a piano, a giant baby carriage, a rodeo clown, a massive corn on the cob, a jail cell and the Golden Gate Bridge.
