Council tenants left with collapsed ceiling and flooding

A section of the ceiling which fell through and poured water into the kitchen at a house in Rathcarrig estate.

Rushing water and screeching alarms sounded around a council house in Rathcarrig Estate in Fermoy on Wednesday, June 28 after a portion of the kitchen ceiling had fallen through and water began to flood the room.

The tenant, who has resided in the council-owned house for some 17 years, had been away when it happened, accompanying her partner to an appointment in CUH and was on her way home when she received a call from her teenage daughter about what was unfolding.

“We noticed nothing beforehand. When I got the call, I asked if they had left the shower on or a tap running or something. We left that morning and the kids were all still in bed asleep. I was shocked at what had happened.
