Local council house renters are up in arms over the Council’s rent reviews, one council tenant in Fermoy having seen her rent increased by a whopping 54%.
The rise in rents comes despite the fact that the Fermoy Electoral Area has been deemed a Rent Pressure Zone where generally, landlords can only increase rents by 2% per annum. It would appear however that this rule does not apply to Cork County Council.
Rent reviews have been sent to people from Cork County Council across the region in recent months and weeks, and the timing of the issue has been called into question by both those affected as well as local politicians.
Last week Cllr William O’Leary raised the rent review issue in a Northern Committee meeting, saying that the rent increases, sometimes in the region of 30% and 40%, were ‘extortionate’.
