Students at St Colman’s College, Fermoy had their student elections on Tuesday morning last and there was a great sense of excitement around the corridors, as boys from each class were called to vote in the ballot.
Candidates have been busy for the past few weeks writing speeches, making posters and running election campaigns to gather support and secure that important number 1 vote.
They even ran a hustings event in the Croke Library at the school, where candidates made a one minute speech, supported by the cheering of their classmates.
“Like all politicians they expounded on their attributes and abilities and made promises if elected,” said the organising teacher.
One representative from each class was elected onto the student council, who will meet regularly and have many projects on their agenda throughout the school year.
These will include Green Schools, Young Environmentalist Award 2019, Operation Child shoe-box appeal, fundraising for this year's school musical ‘Grease’, fundraising for Amnesty International, Childline and the Simon Community and they will also run an art exhibition entitled ‘Junior Cycle, Senior Cycle, Recycle’, where all artwork will be made from recycled materials.
The elected members will also be school ambassadors for open nights, awards ceremonies and other school events.
The student council will also host speakers from Eco-Unesco, the ‘Bin-It Roadshow' from London, wellness awareness speakers as well as speakers from Operation Child.
