Mitchelstown boxer Vladimir Belujsky fought the good fight in New York when he travelled over with the Irish Selection Team at the end of February, but he was defeated by a fighter much more experienced than he was, as the 17-year-old went into the ring to face a 23-year-old two time US champion.

However, the defeat has not deflated Vladimir, who is a student in St Fanahan's and a member of Watergrasshill boxing club, as he is now preparing to fight on Katie Taylor's undercard in Dublin on March 22.

Vladimir is now back into his rigorous training regime as he prepares for that fight, as well as the All Ireland Championships in Dublin in May.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Vladimir said that while his opponent was much bigger, older and more experienced than he was, he accepted the defeat and said that it was a good fight, with a close result in the end.

He added that he wants to thank everyone who has helped and supported him throughout his boxing career so far.

"I would like to thank Albie Coleman, Livinghealth Gym and its members, Mary Lane, Liam Sheehy, Dr Tom O'Callaghan, Dave's Service Station, Walsh's Bar, Colour's paint shop, Thornhill Opticians Mitchelstown, The Avondhu, my coaches Mikey Keating and Patrick Flynn, my family and all of the people who have helped and supported me so far."
