There was ongoing confusion regarding the subject of sludge disposal by Dairygold in the Ballinahown area of Fermoy – with an apparent ‘breakdown in communication’ between the Cork County Council and the co-operative society. Councillor Aileen Pyne uncovered conflicting statements in relation to the injection disposal of waste sludge – Dairygold claimed they were not required to have a permit and were using proper guidelines under EC regulation. Acting deputy county engineer, Michael O’Brien, confirmed to The Avondhu that the Council was seeking clarification on 2 regulations regarding the disposal of (a) waste and (b) sludge, commenting “there is a grey area here between both sets of regulations”.

A golf match held in Fermoy, which was celebrated in centenary style with a match between the Fermoy and Lismore clubs, replicating the original game played in the town on May 11, 1892. Those participating entered into the spirit of the occasion, dressing in appropriate attire, with UDC chairman, Michael Hanley arriving at the clubhouse in horse and trap. It was noted that the original competition in 1892 saw no winner, as the Lismore team had to leave before the match was completed, in order to catch the train home!

A state of the art waste disposal depot was opened in the Townspark area of Lismore, with the waste transfer station constructed and operated by the local authority. With an annual operating cost of £40,000, the overall cost of the development was £70,000, with the facility built on the site of an old quarry, approximately 1 mile from the town. A civic amenity site was also incorporated, to cater for recycling facilities with caretaker at the depot, John Sullivan, saying that the public were giving the facility the thumbs up.

Glanworth Macra member, Richard Quane, represented the Avondhu Region in the national final of the dairy stockjudging, taking 2nd place. For his troubles, Richard was set to head to Italy in October. Club members also had success at Mitchelstown Macra’s Field Evening – Sean Leamy and co, representing Glanworth B, come joint 2nd; while Colman O’Driscoll, Carrignavar (Glanworth B) took the crazy golf title, with Tomas Quirke, Glanworth claimed 1st in the jigsaw competition.

Hurling in Grange was being revived, with enthusiastic youngsters, under the guidance of Jerry Bermingham, playing on the traditional home pitch of hurling – where the Grange hurlers, once known as Funcheon Vale, played from 1911-1918. Blackrock senior hurler, Conor O’Brien, who resided in the area, was available to give guidance to the youngsters.

Ballyhooly U16 footballers continued their winning run the league championship, recording a fine win over Liscarroll in Kildorrery. The victory ensured a semi-final spot. Michael Mullane and Colum O’Connor were the pick of the backs on the day, while Fergal O’Connor, Joe Darling, Kevin Creed and Alan Barry performed strongly down the centre. The final scoreline – Ballyhooly 4-13 Liscarroll 2-3. St Catherines footballers progressed to the second round of the junior A championship, when recording a 2-11 to 0-6 victory over Cloyne. The game was put to bed in the opening half, when leading by 2-6 to 0-3.
