The last game of the 2012/13 season took place last Saturday at Brideview Park when the final of the Liam Fitzgerald Cup, sponsored by Alan McNamee, Heating and Plumbing, was played between Mogeely and Caherdrinna. In a really exciting finale to the season, both sides served up a wonderful game of football which was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with cup favourites Mogeely winning 7-6.

This coming Sunday we have the final of the Fraser Cup at Brideview Park.

LIAM FITZGERALD CUP FINAL

Mogeely 1 Caherdrinna 1

Mogeely win 7-6 on pens

What a cracker of a Liam Fitzgerald Cup final we had last Saturday at Brideview Park, Tallow, when favourites, Mogeely, had to depend on a penalty shoot-out to win the cup, to add to their league promotion trophy. This was as good a cup game as had been seen all season.

On an excellent Brideview pitch, Caherdrinna played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and after 10mns John Frewen had an effort well saved by Wallace in the Mogeely goal.

The North Cork side took the lead on 16mns when Eddie Murphy sent a high ball over the Mogeely defence and Gary Lynch flicked the ball over the ‘keeper into the net for the lead goal. Minutes later the same player almost repeated the same act, but this time his effort went over the bar.

On 28mns, winner of the Golden Boot, Ethen Hayes received a pass from Alan Collins, but he shot wide.

After 31mns, a great move from Caherdrinna by Lynch, onto Frewen and his pass to Murphy brought a great save from Wallace. Minutes later O’Donoghue in the Caherdrinna goal made a great save from McCarthy, tipping his effort over the bar. Mogeely were coming more into the game as the half progressed and it came as no surprise when they equalised with 2mns to the half-time whistle. Alan Collins headed on for the inrushing Hayes to score and bring the sides level at the break.

The 2nd half was not played at the same pace as the opening half with both defences on top. With 10mns to go, English for Caherdrinna was denied a goal by Mottalebi who cleared off the Mogeely line. Minutes later Lynch was denied by the offside flag, and in the last 4mns Mogeely had chances, with Collins denied by a great save by O’Donoghue and Hayes shooting across the goal and just past the post.

The penalty shoot-out was as exciting as one would see in any game.

The sides were level after the first five spot kicks, which saw two misses from either team. We then went to sudden death and this is where the excitement really mounted. Another 8 penalties had to be taken before we had a winner, with Mogeely winning the shoot-out 7-6. A truly remarkable game and as exciting a finish as one could hope for at the end of the season.

Credit both teams for a very sporting final. Mogeely have now completed a league and cup double and while favourites to win on Saturday, were pushed all the way by a very strong and determined Caherdrinna. The North Cork side, while disappointed at losing the final, especially in a penalty shoot out which is a lottery, can take heart with the experience gained. More especially against a team that will be playing Premier football next season, and can now look forward with confidence to their second season in the WW/EC League.

After the game, league chairman, Paddy Tobin complimented the two teams on a very sporting and exciting cup final. He congratulated the winners and commiserated with the losers. Paddy thanked the Brideview club for the use of their excellent facilities, and complimented the three officials on a job well done.

Finally, he thanked Alan McNamee for his sponsorship of the cup, and Alan then presented the trophy to the winning captain, John O’Donovan, who suitably replied.

For ourselves, we say a special thanks to our friend Liam Fraser, who reported on the game as we were otherwise involved with football in the West of Ireland. Liam kept us in touch with the happenings as the game progressed. Many thanks.

FAI JUNIOR AGM

The AGM of the FAI Junior Council was held on Saturday last in the Southern Hotel, Sligo. The WW/EC League was represented by the hon. secretary of the league, Paddy Pollard.

The FAI Junior Cup final between Sheriff FC and Kilbarrack will be played at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, 2nd June, prior to the senior international between Ireland and Georgia.

Paddy Pollard was presented with a medal for years of service to the Junior Council.

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP FINAL

Last Sunday at Cooke Park, Tipperary, Pike Rovers, Limerick, defeated Clonmel Celtic, TS&DL 2-1 in a very exciting and entertaining cup final.

With one of the largest crowds for a number of years present, they were treated to an excellent display of football by the two best teams in Munster. The result was in doubt right up to the final whistle with Clonmel attacking non-stop to try and get the score to bring the sides to extra time.

The victory made up for the disappointment of Pike losing to Kilbarrack in the FAI Junior Cup semi-final two weeks ago, while Clonmel Celtic can look back on a successful season having won the TS&DL Premier League for the first time a few weeks back.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Munster Senior League side Avondale Utd, who won the Umbro FAI Intermediate Cup for a third consecutive year when defeating Bluebell Utd 4-1 last Sunday in Richmond Park, Dublin. This was a historic victory for the side, as they become only the second club ever to complete the three in a row. The only other time this was achieved was in the 1940s when the now defunct Distillery of Dublin, became the first club to achieve the treble.

Avondale play Sheriff FC in the Ford FAI Senior Cup in a few weeks time in Cork.

FRASER CUP FINAL

This coming Sunday the final of the Fraser Cup will take place at Brideview Park, with a 3pm kick off. Brideview will play the winners of Cappoquin and Railway, who will have played by the time our notes appear in print. Kick-off on Sunday is 3pm.

MFA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM of the Munster Football Association will be held at Rochestown Park Hotel on Saturday, 15th June next commencing at 2.30pm. Clubs are entitled to one ticket per team affiliated and can be obtained by contacting the hon. secretary of the WW/EC League.
