Carraig na bhFear in east Cork is only one of a handful of communities in Ireland to have access to an outdoor swimming pool. Remarkably, it’s been in use for 6 decades, which is some achievement. To mark this significant anniversary, a function was held in The Arches in the village last Saturday night.

This gathering brought together swimming pool volunteers, past and present, to reflect on what has been an unqualified success story.

Given the costs of maintaining this heated facility, ‘volunteerism’ plays a vital role in sustaining the project and without people making themseves available during the summer months, it would be impossible to staff and maintain the pool.
