Castletownroche road surface ‘pathetic’

The road surface on the Close Road by the GAA pitch; the work has come in for heavy criticism.

One Castletownroche man is highly critical of the council’s work on the Close Road adjoining the village. The road has recently been tarred between the church and the GAA pitch but local man Brian Hogan, has called the work ‘pathetic’, describing it as ’the most abysmal road I’d ever seen’.

Mr Hogan showed footage of the road surface, pointing out the loose chipping, questioning the safety of the road for children cycling.

He also maintained that no 25kph signs were put up for about two days, warning of the new surface.

He went on to criticise local councillors Nelius Cotter and William O’Leary, both of whom he had contacted about the state of the work, for their perceived inaction; he also expressed no faith either in two other local councillors, Deirdre O’Brien and Frank O’Flynn, whom he had not contacted but: ‘Why would you waste your time calling?’

He said he has seen a lot of nice asphalting being done in areas out in the middle of the countryside, referring specifically to the Rathcormac area, crediting contractors for the work there, rather than the council.

“How come we can’t get the same surface down here in Castletownroche? How come we couldn’t get asphalt? I guarantee you, you wouldn’t get this up around the Bride Rovers’ area”.

Concluding, he said: “This is the cut of the road now; I’d like to see the engineer who signed off on this. I’ve a tendency not to expect much more of Cork County Council,” adding “but our local councillors will be coming around looking for votes”.
