The competitive season in the WW/EC League concluded on Sunday evening last at Brideview Park, when Cappoquin defeated Brideview in a penalty shoot-out after the sides finished scoreless after 110 minutes of football.

While there is an U17 league commencing this week, the junior and youth leagues and cups are now concluded and this is a credit to everyone involved with the league, from clubs, players, match officials and the management of the league. All can now take a break for the next few weeks until the new season commences in the middle of August.

Cappoquin win 1-3 on pens

The Fraser Cup final was played at Brideview Park on Sunday evening last and after a scoreless 90mns and still scoreless after the 20mns extra time, the result was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with Cappoquin winning 3-1.

On a bitterly cold evening, more reminiscent of a winter’s day, and before a large attendance, the game was played on a perfect surface, ideal for fast ground football. Brideview had the advantage of the wind that blew down the pitch, and while on top for most of the half, could not break down the Cappoquin defence. While Cappoquin had a few chances, the goalkeeping of David Tobin ensured there was no score at the break. Indeed this was a game that had two excellent goalkeepers, while Cappoquin’s Cathal Fitzgerald would distinguish himself in the penalty shoot out.

Cappoquin, with the wind to their backs for the second 45 minutes, attacked straight from the restart and it took a brilliant save by Tobin from McCarthy to deny the Cappoquin side the lead on 52mns. At the other end, Stefan Tobin had two chances but failed to trouble Fitzgerald on either occasion. Tobin did well to save from substitute Shine with 13mns remaining and the final whistle saw us into extra time.

Again Tobin kept Brideview in the game with two good saves and when there was no result after the 20mns extra time, we went to the penalty shootout. There is no doubt it was exciting for the large attendance as all penalty shoot-outs are, but nerve racking for the young players. Cappoquin scored three of their four penalties taken, and Brideview could only find the net once from their four attempts. Credit here to Cappoquin ‘keeper Fitzgerald who saved three of the Brideview spot kicks with excellent saves.

Overall, an exciting finish to a very entertaining game, but it was evident that both teams knew each other fairly well. To all the players we say well done on a very sporting cup final.

After the game Paddy Tobin, chairman WW/EC League thanked both teams for a very sporting game, congratulated the winners and commiserated with the losers. Paddy thanked the Brideview club for the use of the ground, which he said was in excellent shape and thanked the match officials for a very good performance. The chairman said youth football is very important to every club within the league and it is also important for the league to foster youth football.

Paddy concluded saying the Fraser family name is synonymous with Brideview and association football in West Waterford/East Cork and he thanked the Fraser family for sponsoring the Youth Cup.

Kieran Fraser on behalf of the Fraser family, presented the medals to both teams and the Fraser Cup to Gavin McCarthy, Cappoquin. Gavin replied on behalf of the team and Cappoquin club.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM of the West Waterford/East Cork Junior League will be held on Monday, 10th June at Lismore House Hotel, commencing at 8pm. Each club is entitled to one representative per team registered within the WW/EC League.

The AGM is the most important meeting of the year, as the past season is reviewed in full, with reports from the hon secretary, the hon treasurer and the chairman - all three reports outlining the events of the past season. The club representatives have the opportunity to express their club’s views and opinions on the workings of the league since last June.

When one looks back, it has been one of the busiest seasons in a while, especially with the premier title going to the very last game of the season, and relegation also going to the last couple of games.

The rumour machine is at full throttle at present as it always is at this time of the year, often called the silly season, with new teams hoping to join and other teams that may not be around come August.

We often wonder where those rumours originate, but as there are no games on the field of play at present, there are those who assume they are in the know, and we all know what assumption is!

So, we will have to wait until Monday, June 10th to find out for ourselves what the composition of the league will be next season.

MUNSTER FA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM of the Munster Football Association will take place on Saturday, 15th June at Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, commencing at 2.30pm. Clubs are entitled to one ticket per team registered and these may be obtained by contacting the league hon secretary.

FAI JUNIOR CUP FINAL

Tickets are on sale for the FAI Junior Cup final which will take place on Sunday, 2nd June at the Aviva Stadium between Sheriff YC and Kilbarrack Utd. Both teams contested the final last season, and by appearing again this year are creating history, as the same two teams have never contested two consecutive finals. The cup final will be played before the senior international challenge game between Ireland and Georgia.

FORD FAI CUP

This Saturday night at the RSC Waterford, the Blues will welcome Sligo Rovers in the 2nd round of the Ford FAI Senior Cup. The westerners, who won the cup two seasons ago and are the current Airtricity League champions and lie in 2nd place in the league at present, will be the red hot favourites to have their name in the draw for the next round.

While Waterford have had a very bad start to the season, they came away from Athlone on Friday night last with all three points with a 1-0 victory. This was an important result before the cup game on Saturday night and hopefully we will be able to prove the pundits wrong with a win that will see Waterford’s name in the draw for the next round. Kick-off at the RSC on Saturday is 7pm.

SYMPATHY.

Sympathy is extended to our friend and colleague Eddie Cunningham, Tallow, chairman West Waterford Board and the extended Cunningham family, on the death last weekend of Phyllis. Ar dheis De ar a hanam.
