Just like autumn, Anglesboro Harvest Fair is approaching fast. It's always a big occasion for the people of this south Limerick village who have an extra spring in their step following a spectacular 12 points increase in the National Tidy Towns competition.

With the feelgood factor kicking in, the timing of the forthcoming fair couldn't be better (it starts on Tuesday 24th September and continues until the 29th).

A lot of the old favourites are back and when you have some fresh ideas in the mix it all makes for a great few days of entertainment.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th

Card playing is a traditional and popular pasttime in Anglesboro and the region's 45 drive exponents will be delighted that they have Tuesday, September 24th to themselves. The venue is the local hall, the starting time is 8.45pm and there will be some attractive prizes up for grabs.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th

The Thorny Rose was a big hit last year and we're glad to report that a new 'crop' of roses are in bloom. A combination of pageant, concert, play and comedy show, this event is really great craic and should attract a large crowd. It takes place in the hall, admission €10. Tickets available from committee members.

SATURDAY, 28th SEPTEMBER

A special harvest thanksgiving Mass will take place at 8pm. This is followed by bingo in the hall at 8.30pm. The bingo committee are hoping for a good turn out. Bingo is a very accessible game and the perfect way to pass away a couple of hours.

SUNDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER

Sunday is the big one and there's a full programme of events lined up to keep everyone happy. The afternoon will comprise of inter schools football, tug-of-war, dog show, vintage display (including steam threshing), forge demonstration and traditional crafts. Organisers have also booked a pig on a spit so, come hungry!

ANGLESBORO CREAMERY CLOSURE RE-ENACTMENT

Once the nerve-centre of rural activity, Anglesboro Creamery went the way of most rural creameries when it closed in 1981. Director John McGrath and a talented cast drawn from members of Anglesobro Drama Group will re-enact the fateful day, complete with a few interesting twists and turns of their own. Rehearsals have been going on for several months now and according to insiders a spectacular show is in the offing. The event is timed for around the 3.30pm mark and everyone is welcome to attend.

LOTS GOING ON IN GALTEE VIEW BAR

There will be nightly entertainment in the Galtee View Bar for the duration of the festival. The best of drink, good company and pleasant surroundings are guaranteed.

SPECIAL THANKS TO BILLY HOGAN

A special word of thanks to Billy Hogan for assisting with the photographs for this feature. Local man Billy is one the few old style traditional farmers left in the country. Billy has stayed loyal to a slower, more sedate, non-mechanised and organically friendly type of farming that was the norm in Ireland for generations. Billy and his work horse assisted with publicity shots to promote the creamery closure re-enactment.
