Andrew and Marie in Peru awaiting rescue.

Two Avondhu natives trapped in a military Covid-19 lockdown in Peru have appealed for help to return home.

Mitchelstown native Andrew Cotter and his girlfriend Marie Barry from Conna, were holidaying in the South American country when local authorities introduced a strict shutdown.

The couple have tried to get back to Ireland but flights are limited and they are struggling to find diplomatic answers from Irish authorities.

Speaking to The Avondhu on Wednesday, Andrew said he and Marie are safe and have not contracted the virus but are concerned that the health system in the country may not be able to help them if they get sick.
