A walk through Presentation Secondary School Thurles, and you can’t but feel the importance of achievement. Last year over 20% of Leaving Cert students scored over 500 points in their state exams.

Outside the staff room there is a notice board with the successful football and camogie winning teams of last year. They were treble winners, the latest group of girls to excel on the National stage.

As you continue into the sports hall more photographs of winning teams don the walls. Senior All Ireland soccer winners, Munster soccer winners, ladies football winners, senior Munster camogie champions. The list goes on, the photographs hang row by row.

There is one familiar face in many of the school teams, a lady who I have come to interview – Aoibheann Clancy from Kilbehenny.

Last month she represented the Republic of Ireland’s U17 soccer team in the European Elite Qualifiers. In May she will represent her country again, this time at U16 level at a development tournament in the Czech Republic.
