SOUTH TIPP CYCLING CLUB

On April 3rd the South Tipp Cycle Club held its annual charity sportive, the Vee Valley Challenge. This year the selected beneficiary was the Paul Cunningham Fund. Over 100 cyclists from across Munster converged on Clogheen to take part over two routes 110K and 50K.

Both routes started in Clogheen and included the iconic climb up the Vee made famous by the Nissan Classic back in the 1980s.

Thanks to the support of the cyclists, local community and our many sponsors the sportive was a tremendous success and South Tipp Cycle Club were delighted to be able to present a cheque for €1,800 to Paul Cunningham.

Thanks

We would like to thank several people for their assistance and support on the day. Morrison BMW Mini for supplying support cars. PJ Cullinan, John Byrne, Bernard Lonergan, Red Cross and all those who manned the lead and service vehicles.

The motorbike and stationary marshals who kept everyone safe at junctions on the road. Waterford City & County Council for opening the Vee-Lismore road ahead of schedule for us. Lismore and Clogheen Community Councils for the use of their halls.

We would also like to thank all those who supported the sportive with refreshments on the road and at the finish in Clogheen Hall. In particular we would like to thank Glenpatrick Spring Water, Vee Valley Fruit & Veg, Martin’s Fruit & Veg., Dunnes Stores, Tom Lonergan Newcastle, Dealz Clonmel and Eileen Condon. We would also like to thank all those members of the community who donated various baked goods and treats.

Cycling has become the third largest participation sport in Ireland and through participation in sportives, cyclists can make a real contribution to charities around Ireland.

South Tipp Cycle Club are delighted that the Vee Valley Challenge has now become an established event on the sportive calendar and we are already planning the 2017 event.
