All-Ireland camogie final beckons for Lismore intermediate girls

In the latest chapter in their quest to win back-to-back All-Ireland intermediate camogie titles, Lismore take on Connacht champions Oranmore/Meree in the All-Ireland semi-final this weekend.

Having dispatched Ballyhale Shamrocks after a replay in last year’s intermediate final and claimed the 2013/14 Munster title with victory over Cork side Sarsfields, the West Waterford side are incredibly only two steps away from a second All-Ireland intermediate title.

On Sunday, February 1, they travel to nearby Charleville to take on their Galway opponents at 2.30pm.

In the Waterford senior final recently, they were pushed all the way by St Anne’s, edging out a one-point victory; 1-7 to 0-9. In the Munster intermediate semi-final, held in October, Lismore had three points to spare in their battle with Tipperary’s Borrisoleigh – seeing off a second-half comeback to keep their All-Ireland dream alive.

The Munster final against Sarsfields was played out in more comfortable fashion, with Lismore netting inside five minutes and running out 2-7 to 0-5 winners. The Trixie Toomey Memorial Cup was then presented to Lismore captain Shona Curran, who features in our 'Player Profile' below.

PROFILE

Name: Shona Curran, club: Lismore, position: Midfield.

Sporting Achievements: Four senior county titles, four Munster club titles, one club all-Ireland. I've been lucky enough to represent my county in camogie and ladies football for the last few years!

Most memorable moment: Definitely winning the All-Ireland with my club - extra special as we have all played together for so many years and had been knocking on the door for a while.

Favourite GAA Player: Very tough one! Tony Browne - great hurler and the service he gave to his club and county for so many years, while not getting the success he deserved.

Advice to Young Players: You only get out what you put into it. Whether it's camogie, school or work, it's all about the effort you put in yourself!

Influence of Camogie on your life: Cliché as it sounds, camogie has been a huge part of my life and has opened so many doors for me! I've made some of my best friends, from club, county and college through camogie. It's a great social outlet and can be a brilliant break from work or study.

On that note, best wishes this weekend to all involved with the team, as they strive for further All-Ireland glory.
