For the purposes of learning, it's important that pupils remain quiet and sit still while lessons are being taught. This is how things should be. However, too much sitting can result in what's referred to as a 'sedentary lifestyle' - the sedentary lifestyle as we all know is not good for our wellbeing and causes a variety of health related issues, most notably obesity.
In Scoil Bhride National School, Rathcormac, they've got the balance just right and if proof were needed, this gleaming new centre of primary school education has just received an 'Active School Flag'.
On Monday last it was raised proudly by past pupil and accomplished ladies footballer, Grace Kearney with assistance from pupils, Aoife Cowman and Conor Byrne. Shelly McAteer, a keep-fit expert was also on hand.

Active School status requires a lot of effort and is all about securing a balance between healthy eating and regular exercise. The school avails of every available opportunity to promote both healthy eating and exercise and thanks to the enthusiasm of teachers and the support of parents, success is being achieved.

One of the healthiest pursuits you can engage in is walking and, having hoisted the Active School Flag, students, accompanied by staff, set off on a brisk walk around Rathcormac village. Great care was taken crossing the road and for safety, pupils wore high visibility jackets. Children walked with a spring in their step, safe in the knowledge that they are now in a school where everyone aspires to be fit and healthy.
