Superintendent Eamonn Carey of Fermoy gardai, described as ‘a complete exaggeration’ certain reports in national newspapers that the opening of a sex shop in the town was thwarted, following a Garda raid. A planned raid had taken place on a flat in the town, which had led to much of the speculation. The reported seizure of ‘blue movies’ was however inaccurate, with Supt Carey telling The Avondhu that nothing of an offensive nature was seized.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a group of between 6 and 10 young men had ‘dropped their trousers and waddled down the main street of Glanworth’! Those who took part in ‘the midnight trot’ were visitors to the area who had arrived in the village by bus and the ‘cheeky act’ was a dare on their part.

Planning permission which was granted by Waterford County Council for a 25 house private development at Fair Field in the heritage town of Lismore, was objected to by local residents. Speaking at a meeting of the authority, Tallow councillor, Willie McDonnell said the objectors ‘felt this new development would interfere with their privacy and result in more traffic’. They were also opposed to the concept of an entrance to the site from New Street.

Eight students at St Colman’s College, Fermoy had a lucky escape when a barrier collapsed as they watched a handball match from the viewing gallery, sending them onto a concrete floor 11 feet below. According to principal Sean Cotter, the Leaving Cert students were taken to Cork Regional Hospital. Thankfully, the worst injury was a fractured finger, while one student was detained in hospital overnight for observation, being released the following day.

Avondhu senior hurlers recorded a good win over Tracton, in a challenge match played in Blarney. Emerging victors on a scoreline of 2-20 to 1-10, Kilworth’s Noel O’Brien and Jody Hayes from Mallow were Avondhu's goal scorers on the day.
