
The awards keep coming for the inclusive Sanctuary Runners group, who were amongst the award recipients at the Active Community Awards 2025, hosted by the Cork Sports Partnership Vertigo, Cork County Hall, Cork.
Convent Primary School in Mallow were also on the rollcall of winners, one of five category winners on the day. Receiving the School Award, in recognition of their efforts to embed physical activity and wellbeing into their school culture and ensuring inclusivity for all pupils, the five award categories showcased a diverse range of achievements.
The spirit of community and inclusion was alive and well at an event that brought together local leaders, volunteers, and partners to celebrate the incredible stories behind this year’s winners.
The afternoon began with a warm welcome as guests gathered to enjoy tea, coffee, and conversation overlooking the city. As the event unfolded, attendees were treated to the premiere of each winner’s award video, bringing their stories to life on screen. Smiles and applause filled the room as guests learned how these individuals and groups have transformed their communities through sport and physical activity.
The Inclusion Award went to Sanctuary Runners for fostering integration and solidarity through running and walking, connecting asylum seekers, refugees, and Irish residents.
On the day, the Champion Award went to Sean Sheehan, Dunmanway Boxing Club for his tireless voluntary work as coach and mentor, creating a safe, inclusive space for young people. While the Group/Club Award went to Clonakilty Women’s Shed. Special Recognition Award went to John Connolly, for founding Inniscarra Seniors on the Move and dedicating decades of expertise to improving physical activity opportunities for older adults.
The atmosphere was one of celebration and gratitude, as winners accepted their certificates and trophies surrounded by family, friends, and supporters.
Michael Carey, chairperson of Cork Sports Partnership, reflected on the exceptional standard of nominations, saying that the winners represent “the very best of community spirit and commitment to active living.”
Closing the event, Kristine Meenaghan, CEO of Cork Sports Partnership, expressed heartfelt thanks.
“Thank you to every volunteer, teacher, coach, and organiser who makes Cork a more active and inclusive place. Today’s winners are shining examples of what can be achieved through passion and collaboration.”
The 2025 Active Community Awards not only honoured remarkable achievements but also reminded everyone present of the power of community-driven action to create healthier, happier lives.
