The annual IMMRAMA Festival of Travel Writing in Lismore is now less than a month away, running from Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, June 14.

Now in its 13th year, Robert Fisk, Charley Boorman and Jonathan Shackleton are just some of the global travel writers who are pencilled in for the highly acclaimed festival.

Giving the keynote speech on Saturday, June 13 will be the 7-time British International Journalist of the Year, Robert Fisk. He has been the Middle East correspondent for The Independent for more than 20 years, and is one of the few Western journalists to have interviewed Osama Bin Laden.

Fisk has penned seven books, including ‘The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East’ in 2005, and has produced a documentary series, ‘From Beirut to Bosnia’. He will take to the stage at 8pm on Saturday night.

Prior to this talk, TV presenter, travel writer and actor Charley Boorman will take to the stage at 3pm on Saturday. Best known for his enthusiasm for motorbikes, Boorman, along with fellow actor Ewan McGregor, starred in the series ‘Long Way Round’ for the BBC.

Also speaking at the festival is Jonathan Shackleton, a cousin of the Kildare-born Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. As a lecturer and guide, he has accompanied 21 groups to the Antarctic in the past 10 years. On Friday night of the festival, he will speak of his own expeditions through the same territory as his explorer cousin.

Other speakers at the festival include Egyptian author Salwa Elhamamsy, who is launching her travel book on Ireland, author Paul Clements, travel-writer Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent and historian Donald Brady.

Family Fun Sunday will take place at the Millennium Park, with music by Baker Street. Entertainment will be on offer with the Lismore Farmers Market on the castle avenue and a cricket match between Lismore Cricket Club and Dublin Writes XIXI.

The festival will come to a close on Sunday evening, when Gerard Taylor will speak about his book, ‘But for Ireland, I’d not tell her name’.
