Colum Browne’s XL store in Clogheen has been crowned Overall Store of the Year at the recent XL Store of the Year Awards which were held at at the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Co Carlow and attended by retailers from all over Ireland. The store also picked up the Award for Best High Street Store.

Judges were impressed with the stores friendly customer service, excellent deli, and dedication to quality and presentation throughout the store. Until the store opened a year ago, residents of the community had a 25km round trip to buy fresh bread rolls.

The establishment of the store has provided customers with a local shop for fresh meats, home baked produce, hot and cold deli offerings, an ample seating area, lotto and many other services. Colum places a huge emphasis on delivering customers great value in their shopping basket and customer service is the priority of every staff member.

Owner Colum Browne, a native of Clogheen himself told The Avondhu he was absolutely delighted and blown away by the win considering that the business has only been in operation for 12 months.

“I also want to thank my staff who are always at the top of their game in addition to our loyal customers because without them there would have been no awards. I look forward to continuing to build the business so to serve them even better in the future."

The XL Store of the Year Awards are only given to stores that pass a tough year-long inspection, including visits from mystery shoppers. Now in their sixth year, the Awards attracted a record 180 entrants from all across the country. The Awards ceremony was run by BWG Foods, owners and operators of the XL brand.

Willie O’Byrne, Managing Director of BWG Foods, paid tribute to all 14 winners and all finalists on the night.

“XL retailers take pride in serving their local community at the highest possible level, so it is no surprise to see so many have enrolled in the XL Store of the Year Awards programme. By striving to meet these exacting standards they help improve not just their own stores, but the XL brand as a whole across Ireland.”

The XL retail group continues to grow with over 230 stores across the country, and John Moane, Managing Director of BWG Foods Wholesale Division, said it’s not hard to see why XL continues to expand, working with very passionate local community retailers.

“XL retailers have a passion and drive for business, and a real knowledge of and loyalty to their local community. I’d like to congratulate our very deserving Overall Store of the Year winner, Colum Browne, on his award tonight. I’m sure we’ll see even more XL retailers at the awards ceremony next year.”
