Labbacallee was erected over 4000 years ago at the very end of the Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age.
Man had first colonised the Blackwater Valley up to 5,000 years earlier and for millennia people fished along the rivers, which teemed with salmon and eel. They hunted and gathered everything else they needed from the densely-forested interior.
The building of Labbacallee is an indication that, by 2000 BC, agriculture provided the inhabitants of the Blackwater valley with the reserves of food, time and manpower required to undertake such large-scale adventure.
