Fermoy man, Tom Ahern, believes his love of the craic puts him in with a fighting chance of taking the 'Mr. Personality' title at the upcoming Mr. Personality Festival in Kilkenny later this month.

It's the 8th year of the festival which is organised by Kilkenny Macra na Feirme and takes place on April 19 and 20 in the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny. It's sponsored by Kilkenny, Carlow and District Farm Relief Services.

22-year-old Tom is a part time farm relief worker himself. The young Kilworth man's full-time job is with Silver Pail Dairy in Fermoy. An outgoing individual, he numbers hurling, Irish folk and rebel songs, shooting and Macra among his hobbies and interests.

A busy weekend is lined up for the contestants beginning with on-stage interviews on the Friday evening, conducted by former Macra President Matt O'Keefe. That'll be followed by an evening of music. Tom will have an early start on the Saturday morning as he faces a series of contestant challenges in the hotel ballroom beginning at 9am. After lunch each contestant will be interviewed by a panel of judges. After a photocall on Saturday evening with the sponsors there will be an informal banquet at which Mr. Personality for 2013 will be announced.

"It should be a fun weekend alright," Tom said this week. He entered for the craic and also to get the name of Fermoy Macra out there. He's treasurer of the local branch. "People think it's an organisation just for farmers but that's not the case it's a good organisation for young people generally," he says. A dozen-strong contingent from the club intend travelling to Kilkenny to support Tom in the competition.
