Plan to bring replica Lismore crozier becomes unstuck

It now seems likely that the proposal to bring the replica Lismore crozier to the town, as part of the 400th anniversary of the signing of the charter, will not become a reality.

Lismore Town Councillor Orla Russell appears to be fighting an uphill battle in her bid to help the local heritage centre secure the replica Lismore crozier for display in the centre. She’s raised the matter on a number of occasions now, asking for the town council to go some way towards meeting the cost of the necessary security to safeguard the crozier, while on display in Lismore.

There was no update on the matter, she was told at the members’ recent monthly meeting. She had hoped it could be secured for a visit this year while the town marks the 400th anniversary of the signing of the charter. Noting that the heritage centre is due to undergo refurbishment shortly, she conceded that it wasn’t going to happen this year.

However, she still believes they should try to get it for next year and that they should contribute towards the cost.

Councillor Davy Whelan said they’d have to wait and see in their budget.
