An 18 strong team from Cork city will participate in the International Children’s Games (ICG) in Tallinn, Estonia next month.
Competing across three sports, athletics, swimming and 3v3 basketball, the games take place from August 3rd to 8th. The ICG commenced in 1968 and to date over 50,000 young athletes, from over 900 cities, have competed against their peers.
Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, said that this was “a fantastic opportunity” for young people from Cork city to compete on the international stage.
“We are all very proud of them and are looking forward to seeing them represent Cork with their skills, personalities and passion. Participating in sport is vital for young people, it leads to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle in later life. Best of luck to the team and I hope each and everyone of you have a memorable experience at the games”, the Lord Mayor said.
Assistant Sports Development Officer for Cork City Council, Dan Fox, who previously represented Ireland on the international stage, said he was “so excited for these youngsters to have this chance”.
“I still have such fond memories of travelling to different places and learning new cultures, traditions and meeting athletes from other countries. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, including the Cork Athletics County Board, Swim Ireland and Basketball Ireland. We will give it our best at these games and I am hopeful that we will be able to compete on all fronts and I’m very confident that our team will go onto bigger and better things in their sporting fields”.
