Clancy Street local and staunch Fermoy stalwart, William Hughes, was laid to rest on Saturday last following his sad passing after a brief illness on June 17th.
A man with a passion for the town, despite no longer being a member of council, William’s work as a community activist continued right up to the end, as a mere week before news of his death broke, Mr Hughes had submitted a poem to The Avondhu entitled ‘Illusions’ calling for action on Fermoy Weir.
Several weeks ago, William launched a book entitled ‘ Sober Strength: My Fight for Recovery and Community Change’, which he dedicated to good friend, Kieran Moran, and in 2022, The Avondhu covered some of William’s life story in ‘By The Fireside’, detailing how activism changed his life for the better.
