Kilworth mum among those protesting lack of special education places

Some of those who gathered in Cork to protest the lack of special education places for children.

Hundreds of people gathered in Cork City on Saturday last, protesting at the lack of school places for children with special needs. Several of those who gathered were yet to receive a place in a special class or special school, with many having been rejected from more than one special school.

Among them, is Kilworth mother, Ciara Maguire whose son James will be six in September and has yet to get a school place, despite having applied to four schools in Cork and one in Tipperary.

“He’s currently in early intervention, he has a routine. He loves going out the door. He’s a very happy boy to be able to grab his bag and head out, but come September, we have nothing. We have no plan. I have been in contact with the Seno (Special Educational Needs Officer). Again, she has no update for me …” Ciara told The Avondhu.
