A special event is set to take place at the Palace Theatre in Fermoy this November as part of Fermoy Friendship Week, bringing the community together to enjoy an afternoon of storytelling and social connection.

The event, organised by Muintir na Tíre Cork, will be held on Thursday afternoon, 14th November, from 2pm to 4.30pm, featuring Pakie O’Callaghan performing the stories of the legendary Eamon Kelly. Pakie O’Callaghan, whose career spans stage, TV and radio, will bring to life the timeless tales of Eamon Kelly, who is fondly remembered as “the Seanchai of the 20th century.” Kelly’s stories capture the essence of rural life, filled with humour, wisdom, and insight.

FERMOY FRIENDSHIP WEEK

This storytelling afternoon is one of the highlights of Fermoy Friendship Week 2024, an annual celebration dedicated to building community spirit and fostering new social links. The week’s programme is packed with various activities designed to bring people of all ages together, promoting inclusion and participation in community life.

The event is being jointly organised by Fermoy Community Network and Muintir na Tíre Cork, a community development organisation that has been working to enhance the quality of life in rural communities across Ireland since 1937. Muintir na Tíre focuses on empowering communities through initiatives in areas such as social inclusion, health and wellbeing, and community development.

INTRODUCTION TO CORK CULTURAL COMPANIONS

The event will also feature an introduction to Cork Cultural Companions, an Age & Opportunity Arts initiative that encourages older adults to enjoy arts and cultural events together, creating new friendships and helping to reduce social isolation. Attendees will have a chance to learn more about the programme and how it works.

LOCAL ORGANISATIONS SHOWCASING

Before the storytelling performance, from 2pm to 3pm, there will be refreshments and information stalls from various local organisations, with the opportunity to discover community groups and services available in Fermoy and surrounding areas. It’s a great chance to explore new interests and get involved in the local community.
