Clonmel councillor Siobhán Ambrose has welcomed the opening of the new 33-bed step-down Slievenamon Unit at Tipperary University Hospital, as well as the new link corridor at the facility. The €7 million unit, which opened in December, will accommodate patients who need non-specialised short-term care.
This investment, said Cllr Ambrose, is as a result of an invitation by her to the then-Taoiseach Minister Micheál Martin to visit the hospital, which he did on October 29th, 2021. The funding was approved as part of the Government’s allocations in February 2022.
Cllr Ambrose said it was great to see the unit finally opened and that it was ‘timely’, in the flu season when hospitals are generally under their greatest pressure.
Furthermore, Minister Stephen Donnelly informed Deputy Jackie Cahill in May 2023, that he had also sanctioned €75 million for the upgrading of the medical, paediatric and maternity units in the hosptial.
“This huge level of investment of both the €7 million and the €75 million respectively, will ensure that Tipperary University Hospital can continue its extensive expansion and redevelopment works into the future. I thank the General Manager, Mrs Maria Barry and all of the hospital staff, the HSE officials, Minister Micheál Martin for pushing this funding, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and Deputy Jackie Cahill, all of whom helped to ensure this funding was secured for the hospital,” Cllr Ambrose said.
