Two community activists in Fermoy are spearheading a campaign to raise funds for typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Former mayor of Fermoy, William Hughes and his colleague, Noreen Doody are seeking both collection volunteers and funds for those stricken by the disaster.

As of this week, William had secured the necessary permit and was putting final preparations in place.

"We hope to start our door to door collection on Monday December 16 between the hours of 3pm and 7pm, it's a very good cause and all donations will be gratefully accepted," he said.

Fermoy hasn't been slow in responding to the crisis and an initiative headed up by Fine Gael councillor, Noel Barnes has already topped €5,000 - according to reports a series of church collections in Fermoy yielded almost €10,000. Popular licensed premises, Cheers and The Elbow Lane Inn have also held fundraisers.

That level of activity underlines the innate generosity and compassion of Fermoy people to help others in their time of need. Any individual or business who made be able to assist in the forthcoming fundraiser is welcome to contact William on 087-9474875.
