Being part of a student's council is a great way to have the views and opinions of students heard by school staff and in Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown, the student council is held in high regard.

Sixth year student Gemma Coffey was recently voted by the staff members as Head Girl. She was seen by those who teach her to do her best for the school, participate in school activities, show an interest in other students and display good leadership qualities.

Teachers Laura Healy and Trish Nolan, who help with the organising and running of the council, said that Gemma is also involved in the leadership of the council, in conjunction with Michelle O'Brien from fifth year and she is also a spokesperson for the student body at any school events.

COMMUNICATION

Ms Healy told The Avondhu that every class year grouping is represented on the student council and they meet every Wednesday at break times. "Each student is given the opportunity to raise any issues or concerns from their particular class group. Group discussions are then held on how to improve the life of students in the school," Ms Healy said.

"They get to meet the principal on a regular basis to highlight concerns and help find solutions and the student council teaches responsibility, concern and empathy for others, leadership, listening and communication skills and all of these are valuable for future life and are there for the good of the school," Ms Nolan added.
