PJ English, a Fianna Fail candidate for the upcoming local elections, has condemned illegal dumping around South Tipperary, saying it has reached 'epidemic levels'.
He said that things like cookers, beds and all kinds of household rubbish are being dumped on the sides of roads, walkways and in picnic areas.
"Groups such as Knockmealdown Active are doing great work in promoting this beautiful Knockmealdown area for locals and tourists alike, but it could be all in vain when you see rubbish strewn all over the place, which not only is an eyesore, but it also causes infestations of rats," PJ told The Avondhu.
He added that even though South Tipperary County Council have put rubbish bins in place, they are not being used and he said that if the dumping continues to worsen, it will hamper tourism figures for the area.
NEGATIVE EFFECT
"This area is known for its beauty and attracts large numbers of tourists all year round, but if this dumping persists it will have a negative effect on our endeavours. In particular, the entrances of the Coillte sites, which are often where walkers begin their excursions, seem to be a black spot area for dumping.
"The environment inspector of South Tipperary County Council has been informed and hopefully he will get results. If anyone has suggestions for a solution to this despicable problem, please e-mail me on p.j.english@hotmail.com or phone me on 087 7984929," PJ said.
