Wildlife enthusiast and radio contributor, Éanna Ní Lamhna was in Coolagown on Saturday, May 10 to view at first hand the great strides this community has taken to enhance its surroundings while at the same time respecting the natural environment.

Coolagown Development Group has taken the lead in transforming a rural cluster of residential properties into a beautifully maintained neighbourhood that locals are justifiably very proud of.

Blessed with unspoilt countryside, Coolagown has also a number of very important amenities, most notably Kilbarry Wood. The entrance to this forest was the meeting point for last weekend's walk which was led by Éanna.

Possessing an encyclopaedic knowledge of Ireland's flora and fauna, the popular contributor to the RTE radio show 'Mooney Goes Wild', gave a very informative talk on the forest and its inhabitants. Conditions were blustery, however, the worst of the weather held off.

Commenting on a part of the country she hadn't visited before, Éanna said the people of Coolagown had struck a wonderful balance between rural development and respect for their surroundings. She observed that enhancement works had been carried out to a very high standard.

She also said that in terms of recycling and waste management much larger centres of population could learn from the Coolagown experience.
