A Ballyduff Upper woman has been selected to be a volunteer for the Special Olympic World Games being held in Los Angeles in 2015.
Leanne Power, a physiotherapist currently working in Hereford in the UK, is one 30,000 volunteers to be selected for the Games, which will feature 7,000 athletes (80 of whom are Irish) and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries.
Leanne, a former student of St Michael’s National School in Ballyduff and Colaiste an Chraoibhin in Fermoy and a graduate of Sligo Institute of Technology and Coventry University, told The Avondhu she has long had an interest in volunteering, She previously went to Lourdes as a volunteer and spent a summer working with the COPE Foundation in Fermoy.
She described her selection as an ‘opportunity of a lifetime and a life changing event’, one that will hopefully ‘encourage other people to volunteer in the future’. Before the Games next July, each volunteer is required to fundraise €4,750, which will cover the costs of travel, accommodation and per diems as well as raising essential funds for Special Olympics Ireland.
The first such fundraising event is a cake and coffee morning in The Log Cabin in Ballyduff, on Sunday, December 7, at 12 noon. The event will also feature an auction, as well as a fantastic raffle prizes and a special guest. Everybody of all ages is welcome.
