An entertaining Euro 2016 tournament means that on the whole, it has been an enjoyable summer of soccer so far.
In fact, it’s been so enjoyable, it strikes me that some headlines in the world of soccer perhaps haven’t received as much media coverage as they might otherwise have done.
Even when there has been a break from football in the media, it’s been all about for example, Brexit and whatever follows next.
Here are five football stories that whilst they won’t be news to any supporter, I believe they slightly slipped under the radar and would have received more attention had it not been for the Euros and Brexit.
- Ryan Giggs leaving Manchester United after almost 30 years; where will he go next and is there more to why he left?
- Messi retiring from playing international football for Argentina, will he do a u-turn and does his retirement as his country’s top scorer at the age of 29 in any way diminish his legacy? Was it in any way connected to him fearing a jail sentence for tax fraud and wanting to call time on his international career himself?
- The England manager resigning; to my mind the loss against Iceland received much more coverage than his statement of resignation at the end of the game.
- Chile winning the Copa América; they defeated Mexico 7-0 when they met in the quarter-final.
- And finally, Leicester apparently planning a £7 million swoop for Norwich star Robbie Brady. Wouldn’t it be great to see one of our guys signed up by the Premiership champions! Let’s hope it happens.
