Drug addiction meeting in Mitchelstown
With highs of 20 degrees forecast for the weekend, Mitchelstown will play host to the estimated 5,000 revellers who will hit the town for each of the three days over the bank holiday weekend for this year’s Indiependence Music and Arts Festival. For many of the local businesses in the town, particularly those in the pub and restaurant trade, it is expected to be a hectic weekend.
All weekend tickets and Sunday day tickets are sold out. However, there is a very limited number of Friday and Saturday Day tickets remaining but these are expected to sell out before the weekend also. An innovation this year is the production by the organisers of a special magazine, Indie 14, detailing all the events. The magazine comes free with this week's Avondhu so make sure to pick up your copy!
With acts such as Public Enemy, Tom Odell, White Lies, Fun Lovin Criminals, Delorentos and Damien Dempsey headlining this year’s festival, the Friday to Sunday get-together at the Deer farm on the Dublin Road will see 80 or so acts strut their stuff across five stages. It is somewhat of a coup to have Public Enemy, dubbed ‘the fathers of Hip-Hop’, in Mitchelstown and no doubt, many of those who have enjoyed Indiependence in Mitchelston over the past nine years will be back this year for more of the same.
NON-STOP MUSIC
The Big Top Stage will see the first act on at 4.30pm on Friday afternoon and from then on, it will be non-stop action until time is called in the Bacardi Bar in the early hours off Monday morning. In all that, there’s a mix of comedy, cinema and silent discos to keep the revellers entertained.
Friday’s programme will see stars such as Tom Odell, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Walking on Cars, We Cut Corners, Dan Croll and Vann Music to name but a few entertain the crowds on the Main Stage, the HMV Big Top, the Bacardi Bar, the Beer Hall and The Village Stage.
Saturday will have White Lies, Delorentos, David Holmes, The Sultans of Ping, Hudson Taylor, Chloe Howl etc., while this year’s festival headline act, Public Enemy will no doubt be Sunday’s star attraction after Hozier, Fun Lovin Criminals, Damien Dempsey and many more will have rocked the joint before them.
ADVICE
Those attending the festival are advised to plan for both sun and rain, so pack your sun cream and waterproofs; pack plenty of socks if camping and some of humanity's greatest ever inventions, baby wipes! Car pool as parking is €10 per car; keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty water (alcohol has the opposite effect); respect the local residents, keep an eye on each other over the weekend and above all, drink sensibly.
Glass (apart from make-up. perfume, aftershave etc.), sharp objects and/or flammable liquids, will be confiscated. Any drugs found will be confiscated and those found in posession will be handed over to the gardai; do not litter (use bins provided); no aggressive or unruly behaviour and do not store all your cash together. The main thing is - have a great weekend!
