Our South Tipp readers may be interested to learn about Tipperary Roller Girls (TRG), Tipperary’s only women’s flat track roller derby team who invite you to an open day in Clonmel on Sunday, January 19th.
The day will consist of a meet and greet with the public, the opportunity for interested persons to try on skates and gear and to sign up for an upcoming ‘fresh meat’ training course. There will also be a cake sale fundraiser and face painting available on the day.
Often referred to as ‘rugby on roller skates’ or ‘human bowling’, Roller Derby is currently riding a growing wave of popularity and is the most rapidly growing sport in the world. While fast-paced, full-contact, and action-packed, this sport is also very inclusive, welcoming women of all shapes, sizes and skill levels.
TRG currently consists of women of all walks of life – mothers, teachers, business owners and scientists to name but a few. Roller derby is an incredibly fun way to get fit, to make new friends and to feel physically and personally empowered.
Club secretary Meana Hearts says Roller Derby has literally changed her life. “I’ve lost 30 pounds, made amazing friends and learned to accept myself in ways I never dreamed possible, all while having the time of my life!”
While the full contact skating team consists only of women; men and women (18+ yrs.) who are interested in becoming involved in the sport may also skate as referees (no contact) and are encouraged to attend the open day to see what it’s all about.
The open day will run from 2-4pm in the Clonmel High School gym. Please RSVP to info@tipperaryrollergirls.com if you plan on skating so that they can ensure they have your size on the day.
