XL Bully ban met with apprehension locally

New regulations regarding XL Bully type dogs have been met with apprehension locally as this week saw the introduction of new regulations, prohibiting the importation, breeding, selling and re-homing of such animals. From February 1, 2025, it will be illegal to own an XL Bully type dog without a Certificate of Exemption, unique to the dog and owner.

Éadaoin O’Gorman, founder and instructor at Hounds and Helis, a Lismore-based business operating in multiple locations in Cork, Killarney and Dungarvan, has welcomed stricter regulations on dog ownership, but highlighted issues relating to the identification of XL Bullys.

Speaking with The Avondhu, Ms O’Gorman outlined that while she does not own XL Bullies or had any negative experiences with the breed type, she is aware of friends, clients and customers who may be impacted by the new regulations.
