Many local history enthusiasts took the chance to see the world-renowned World War 1 roadshow at the Fermoy Community Youth Centre last Saturday.

The exhibition and lectures were presented by the Cork Branch of the Western Front Association, in conjunction with the Irish Great War Society and the Royal Munster Fusiliers Association.

Among the exhibits on the day was the largest collection of militaria in Ireland, presented by Tom O’Neill, while Marie McCarthy spoke about the contribution of Irish nurses to the war effort. Military historian and author, Gerry White presented a lecture on Cork soldiers and Victoria Cross heroes.

Fermoy and the local area has a long military history, spanning more than two centuries. In the mid 18th century it was home to the largest military establishment in the country. While, during World War 1, 14,000 troops were stationed in camps in the town and beyond at Kilworth Military Camp, later renamed Lynch Camp.

Of the soldiers associated with the local area during WW1, more than 216 died fighting and many more returned home with injury.
