Mallow golfer James Sugrue, has won the Amateur Championship at Portmarnock – the biggest and most prestigious amateur tournament, last held in Ireland 70 years ago.

He beat Euan Walker from Scotland by 2 holes in the 36 hole final today.

As the winner, he now gets to play in open championship (British Open, US Open) and by tradition, will get an invite to play in the Masters Tournament.

Former winners include Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal.

James’s caddy is his lifelong friend Conor Downing also from Mallow – himself an accomplished golfer.
