Works have begun at the site of the former Presentation convent in Mitchelstown, on what is probably the first large-scale development to be built in the town since the economic crash of 2008.

The Avondhu met with Gerry O’Sullivan of Apple Tree Developments on Tuesday afternoon this week at the building site, where the ruins of the Convent which closed on the 9th December 2002 dominates the landscape.

Extensive clearance works have taken place in the development area, which is just over a hectare in size. Barriers have been erected on the site boundary, the vegetation and trees levelled, and machinery is on-site; on the day of the visit, Mr O’Sullivan informed The Avondhu that Burncourt archaeologist and former UCC lecturer Rose Cleary was on-site at that moment.
