Work has begun on temporary repairs to the fish pass in the Blackwater River at the bridge in Fermoy. The contractor is under pressure of time as the repairs must be done by the end of September to prevent interference with salmon travelling upriver to spawn. The works are expected to take approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

The south wall at the base of the fish pass will be the main focus of the temporary repair work. The wall at its junction with the weir will be reinstated where possible to divert water overflowing the weir away from the main fish pass channel.

Works are also planned to regulate the level with new concrete capping being laid over the existing capping.

All work is expected to be carried out from within the river in order to minimise disruption to traffic. There may however, be some disruption to parking on the slipway off Brian Boru Square to facilitate the works.

Local councillor John Murphy welcomed the start of the works which he said had been 'a long time in the planning'.
