Sunday, November 3rd has been chosen as the date for the Fine Gael selection convention for local election candidates for the Fermoy Electoral area. And the party has a new contender - Ballyhooly's Philly Leahy has been nominated by his local branch to seek a nomination.

He's certainly a well known figure locally, a community activist and long term member of the party. He's also a well known seanachai. He is renowned in various parts of the county for his storytelling abilities and poetry recitals and on the sporting front for his association with Point to Point and the horseracing world.

Speaking following his nomination at a branch meeting in Ballyhooly, Philly said he was deeply honoured to have received the support of his home branch in putting his name forward for convention.

The Community Council, GAA and Arts Society in Ballyhooly are just some of the other things he's been involved with in his native parish over the years. Having been associated with Fine Gael for many years and involved in the organisation at branch, district and constituency level, Phil decided to go one further in seeking the nomination to contest the local elections next year.

Living centrally in the newly redrawn Fermoy electoral boundary area, and with his long association with community life, Phil says he's confident he can persuade Fine Gael members at the convention that he is a candidate worthy of selection and should be put on the ticket. "I'd love the opportunity to represent both my party and constitutents," he told The Avondhu.
