Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ fifth-generation Caddy has been awarded the top rating of five stars in Euro NCAP’s latest crash test series.

Result show the new Caddy has not only become appreciably safer, but is one of a select group of top-rated passenger cars that perform especially well in various different crash scenarios.

The new five-star rating for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ family MPV is one star more than achieved by the previous fourth-generation model, despite the introduction of far tougher testing criteria.

More than three million Caddys have been produced but the fifth-generation model is the safest yet. It is also the first time Caddy has achieved the maximum five-star rating. The new model showed a clear improvement in safety standards compared to its predecessor, setting a new benchmark among A-segment MPVs in the process.

According to the detailed test report from Euro NCAP, the Caddy achieved an 84 per cent rating for occupant protection for adults and 82 per cent for children. When it came to safety systems, the Caddy also achieved high scores, which contributed to the top rating of five stars.

In the area of passive safety, new features such as head-protection airbags across all seating rows (regardless of whether the vehicle is a 2-, 5- or 7-seater), and the partner protection now provided in the event of a side-on collision, helped Caddy fulfil the new level of Euro NCAP specifications. In an emergency situation, the partner protection system inflates an airbag between the front seat occupants.

Thanks to wireless transmission, the safety belt warning system also works for Caddy’s removable seats. The Caddy is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform (the same platform used in the Golf), allowing numerous new technologies to be incorporated into the vehicle that make it safer, more practical and efficient.

This month, the Euro NCAP consortium, made up of European highways ministries, motoring associations, insurance company trade bodies and research institutes, published the results of the test series, in which the safety of new passenger car models was tested.
