Against some (minor) protest, Coolagown has retained its status as a village, at least until 2028.

At a seven hour council meeting on Monday, it was Coolagown’s status as a village that was the last item up for discussion. Cllr William O’Leary, who alongside fellow councillors had campaigned on the issue, said he was glad to have ‘the final say’ on the development plan, in a manner of speaking. 

37 submissions had been made to the council in advance of Monday’s meeting, all in support of retaining the village’s status. Speaking with The Avondhu, Cllr O’Leary paid tribute to the local community for undertaking the cause on the ground.
