Kilworth's Ray O'Sullivan has had a life-long fascination with fishing. This journey has taken his from boyhood 'hook and worm' techniques on the Araglin River to the highest level of international deep sea angling.
Drawing on decades of experience, he has matched his considerable skills against the world's finest - and frequently come out on top.
Nearer the end of his competitive angling career than the beginning, Ray is one again on the move - this time in search of giant cod.
The European deep sea cod championships are taking place next week and Ray was given the option of travelling with a 7 strong elite Irish team, for this natural competitor it was too tempting an offer to turn down.
"I was thinking about it for a while, it's a big commitment and fairly demanding but I said I'd give it another go. This is a very prestigious championship with an exceptionally high standard, I still think I have something to offer and I'm travelling out with the team on Friday morning, we'll get two days practice and then it's two full days of competition," he says.
The team's final destination is Olafsvik in Iceland - a largely unspoilt coastal region, that's home to some of the world's largest cod. Having spent the last week or so preparing tackle and carefully choosing a selection of lures, Ray is ready to go - those plump tasty cod had better watch out.
