A local councillor told The Avondhu this week that up to five young families with young children face eviction from properties in the area in the coming months.

Cllr June Murphy who has expressed serious concerns over what she describes as 'the chronic shortage of local authority and privately-owned rental accommodation in Mitchelstown', is appealing to landlords not to evict families over the Christmas period.

Ms Murphy, who is chairperson of the Northern Committee, said she was currently in the process of trying to negotiate ‘extra time’ for some tenants, with a number of landlords.

The former Sinn Fein councillor (now Independent) went on to say that she had raised this issue since her election back in 2014.
