Ireland’s first aged Blackwater Juniper Cask Gin goes on sale this week, as does the first Copper Pot Still Vodka from the Cappoquin-based distillery.

Both products have rested in casks made from juniper wood for at least thirty days. The barrels are specially made for the West Waterford distillery and because juniper trees aren’t very big, they can’t be larger than 50 litres.

“We’re very pleased our gins will be distributed worldwide by MAS Wines & Spirits, the independent global distribution partner for premium spirit brands. People everywhere will now have the chance to enjoy our award-winning gin,” Peter Mulryan of Blackwater Distillery said.

The Juniper Cask Gin contains the same 12 botanicals found in the company’s flagship Blackwater No 5 Gin, though here they are in different proportions.

The sweeter roots like liquorice are increased so the gin isn’t overpowered by the astringent juniper wood. The result is a straw-coloured gin, complex and aromatic with plenty of character and a wonderful long finish.

Also launched this week is Blackwater Copper Pot Still Vodka. This vodka gets its creamy mouth feel from its slow distillation in Sally, copper pot still and never more than 300 litres are made at a time.

That’s a really small batch, which makes it Ireland’s smoothest vodka.
